What is SAfE’s Governance role?

Governance Services to all Surrey maintained schools on behalf of Surrey County Council
  • SAfE is commissioned by SCC to fulfil its statutory duties for Governance services and School improvement. This means SAfE has a legal responsibility to provide specific Governance services to Surrey maintained schools, such as, maintaining up to date records of Governing Bodies in all maintained schools along with their constitution information and Instruments of Government.
  • SAfE has the commission from the LA to support headteacher appointments in maintained schools at all stages of the recruitment process on their behalf
  • SAfE advises and guides Governing Bodies on the appointment of Parent, Staff and LA governors. Autumn term panel dates are October 14th and December 8th – please direct enquiries for appointments to govsupport@schoolsallexcel.com
  • Support for governing bodies and provision of Interim Executive Boards (IEB) for ‘Schools Causing Concern’ or ‘Support and Challenge’ schools. SAfE is supporting Surrey’s network of 30 LLGs in their provision of pivotal support to schools : developing excellent models of leadership and governance.

  • What is on offer from SAfE, to assist you?

    SAfE’s services are available to all Surrey schools and academies, Governing Bodies and Trusts – here to support all schools! This academic year SAfE is offering all schools and academies access to expert Governance training, development opportunities, advice and guidance. Whilst the service does not extend to a full Clerking provision or a full portfolio of training for Clerks and Governors, we are developing a programme of school improvement comprising free and traded events, networks to support the governance community professional learning and development opportunities for the governance community external reviews of governance and consultancy support We will share further information about each aspect of our service as this term progresses.     Governor Support Webinars

    SAfE is delivering a series of free, half termly evening webinars in conjunction with Surrey County Council. to all Surrey schools and academies. Each webinar will address key themes and topics, offering insight and an opportunity to engage in discussion, raise questions and learn from colleagues across the school governance community.

    Each term SAfE will host a free briefing, to provide key information to our Clerking community and offer all Clerks an opportunity for interactive discussion and learning around key topics and themes, with time for networking and Q and A.

    Governance Themed Webinars:

    Spotlight on Ofsted: What Governors need to know : Wednesday 12th October 10-11.30am Please book your place via our booking portal.

    SAfE is delivering a free webinar, open to Governors from all Surrey schools and academies. This practical workshop will focus on the Governor Interview with Ofsted, and how to be prepared. Helping Governors to feel more confident about an Ofsted visit and supporting good preparation for inspection.

    In response to the 10 June Ofsted review of sexual abuse in schools, this free session will address the key aspects of the report that Governors must consider.

    Governance Networks:

    Special Phase Governor Network Monday 15th November 5-6pm Please book your place via our booking portal.

    Open to all Surrey special phase Governors, this free, termly network provides a dedicated opportunity for colleagues to discuss current issues and share best practice, within the specific context of special schools.

    Governance Bulletins

    SAfE provides free, half termly emailed bulletins to Governors. Each Bulletin will provide an update of current Governance information, insight into local and national educational issues and reflections from our Surrey governance community on best practice and the challenges and opportunities we face collectively to deliver improved school leadership and governance.
